WHITSUNDAY: Premier Anna Bligh has announced $100,000 in funding to complete a vital upgrade to the Eimeo Surf Lifesaving Club, during a visit to the Whitsunday region today. Ms Bligh said ALP Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt had lobbied hard for the Government to step in after the club struggled to raise the money needed to complete the club house and training room. “Jan knows what this surf club means to the local community and she told me we should do everything we can to help,” she said. “I want Queenslanders to become the healthiest people in Australia and facilities like the Eimeo Surf Club help us work towards that target.” Ms Jan Jarratt said the $100,000 in financial support would allow the club to finish the upgrade after it had raised over $175,000 for the project. “The club has started the upgrade but need this help for things like work on wheelchair access and the installation of new toilets,” she said. “I know how important the Eimeo Surf Club is to the people who live here. They deserve this and I am delighted to be able to lend them a helping hand.” The commitment follows the announcement of Labor’s policy supporting the State’s iconic Surf Life Saving body early in the election campaign.
The biggest single boost in the 100-year history of Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) – included the donation of a surplus Emergency Services twin-engine rescue helicopter, valued at more than $6 million.
Ms Bligh outlined the commitment of $400,000 a year for the extra operating costs of the helicopter, along with another $200,000 for additional patrols and equipment for lifesaving operations north of Noosa.
