Robert was first elected to the Queensland Parliament in 1989. Robert is Minister for Public Works and Information and Communication Technology.
Robert initially held the seat of Rockhampton North until 1992. In 1995 he won the seat of Rockhampton, which he has held ever since.
Before entering State Parliament, Robert served as a councillor on the Rockhampton City council for five years.
He was born in Rockhampton and has lived there all his life.
Robert started his working life in the building industry working with his father. He holds a Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education. Before entering politics he worked as a teacher and as an organiser for the Queensland Teachers' Union.
From 1992 to 1995 he worked as an adviser to the then Deputy Premier, Tom Burns, who held a range of senior portfolios during that period.
Robert is a member of many local sporting and community organisations. He enjoys fishing and takes an interest in native flora and fauna as well as political history. He and his wife Judy have two sons.
